With over 45 years of experience, take a trip through the JEGS archive and find out more about our company history.
JEGS Electrical was founded 20th April 1970. Martin began by selling lamps, spares, and promotional lines from his secondhand van and the goods stored in lock up garages behind Martin’s home. 1973, JEGS moved to its first warehouse facility in Brook Close, Rochford, Essex.
Malcolm Johnson also joined the JEGS management team alongside Jeff Hammond (Martin’s former band mate in the 1960s). Business continued to grow, with a move to a larger facility at 31 Ely Road, Southend-on-Sea, Essex. In June 1976, JEGS began selling wiring accessories and produced its first catalogue.
In 1980, Martin started sourcing a range of products including torches, lamps and timers from Europe and Hong Kong. This was the start of the JEGS own brand, an important component of the business today.
JEGS became brand leader in the South East of England and recruited a team of Sales Agents to make JEGS a truly nationwide company, led by the Commercial Director, Christine Gibbons (née Gregoire).
In addition, JEGS moved to its current home, 20 Progress Road, Leigh on Sea, Essex, in 1988.
The nationwide expansion of JEGS proved successful demonstrating sustainable year on year growth. Throughout the nineties JEGS became the preferred supplier to the independent retailer buying groups, including British Hardware Federation (BHF), Home Hardware, National Merchant Buying Society (NMBS) and Unimer.
JEGS further expanded its range moving towards more small domestic appliances and additional lamps. In the late nineties, JEGS revamped its Trade Counter selling to local businesses and the local electrical contracting trade.
During this time the hardware range is also launched.
In 2005, JEGS celebrated the milestone of 35 years in business. However, 2 years later it suffered a major fire destroying offices, the warehouse and all its stock.
Just weeks after the catastrophe, JEGS is operational - a true demonstration of staff commitment and the loyalty of the customers. This decade also saw JEGS win the BHF Supplier Of The Year in 2005 and 2007 and became the preferred supplier to additional buying groups.
The long term future of JEGS was secured with daughters, Eloise and Helga Gibbons joining the team as Managing Director and non-Executive Director respectively, while Martin maintained his role as Chairman of the company.
Through investment in a new IT system, branding and a new B2B website, JEGS saw customer satisfaction ratings improve and JEGS was named 2012 BHF Supplier of the Year.
Mid 2017, JEGS was acquired by Qualtex UK, whom have been a supplier of JEGS for almost 30 years. Like JEGS they are a family run business and share similar values of offering a wide range of high quality products at competitive prices to enable you to successfully compete with the multiples.
JEGS will continue to trade as is, so you will still be able to take advantage of our award-winning service, and have full access to the JEGS range.
